In February 2019, my friend had a miscarriage. It was so sad; I wrote this air for her and her partner. She finds it difficult that people don’t talk much about miscarriage, so I considered calling this composition ‘The Miscarriage’. However, upon reflection, I don’t like that term: to me, it implies the carrier of the baby, the woman, failed in some way. I prefer the Irish term, ‘breith anabaí’, which simply means ‘premature birth’. To me, this is a more accurate, non-shaming description.
