Lyrics:

Ma thig tú anocht, tarraing go ciúin;
Tá Muire Mhathair ag tabhairt na cích’
Don leanbh álainn ‘bhfuil an domhan a’ brath air;
Mo bhrón an chailís nach mór dó ól.

Ar shliabh ‘s ar chladach, ta’n solas ag gealú;
Ta síocháin Chríost i mBeithil anacht,
Ta‘n Mhaighdean Bheannaithe go follasach ceanúil
Ar Rí na h-Aoine san mainséar bocht.

Mé thig tú ‘máireach, beidh sí go ciúin,
Fé scáth na croise, ‘sna deora léi
Fa‘n leanbh álainn ‘raibh an domhan ag brath air;
Beidh an chailís diúgtha, ‘s an domhan slán.

Translation:

If you come tonight, pull (the door) quietly;
Mother Mary is breast feeding
The lovely child that the world is depanding on;
My sadness the chalice that he must drink.

On hill and shore, the light is brightening,
The peace of Christ is in Bethlehem tonight,
The Blessed Virgin is openly fond
Of the King of Friday in the poor manger.

If you come tomorrow, she vill be quiet,
In the shadow of the cross, and the tears flowing
For the lovely child that the world was depending on,
The chalice will be drained, and the world saved.
